Phenol is able to react directly with bromine (unlike benzene) in multiple substitution reacts to produce 2,4,6-tribromophenol. The cumene required in the above reaction is prepared from benzene and propene by Friedel-crafts reaction. The hydroxyl group in phenol is an activating ortho/para director, but has some slight steric hindrance too ortho position substitution. Used on large skin areas (as in chemical peelings of the whole face), phenol is toxic (heart and kidneys). Cumene is oxidised into cumene hydro peroxide by air at high pressure which on decomposition by aqueous acid gives phenol and acetone.
